Melding Climate, Culture, College Readiness and Project Lead the Way Together to Achieve Increased Student Achievement on the ACT.
Catalyst-Maria is building a K-12 college preparatory school that has developed a strong academic and behavior culture that prepares scholars for post-secondary success. The standards based K-12 curriculum that is aligned to common core and college readiness standards. Catalyst-Maria is the first K-12 STEM School in Chicago. Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is an engaging and thought-provoking curriculum, where students develop critical thinking skiills through hands-on project-based learning, preparing them to take on real-world challenges. Students will have the opportunity to create, design and build things like robots and cars, applying what they are learning in math and science to the world's grand challenges. PLTW's program for kindergarten through fifth grade, allows young minds to discover the integration and application of science, technology, engineering, and math. PLTW 6th-8th grade curriculum and activities focuses on the study of mechanical and computer control systems; think robotics and animation. Students also explore the importance of energy, including innovative ways to reduce, conserve and produce it using solar, thermal and wind power. The 9th-12th grade curriculum builds on the design process and its application. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to help them design solutions to solve proposed problems, document their work using an engineer's notebook, and communicate solutions to peers and members of the professional community. Finally PLTW has designed a capstone course that allows students to work in teams to design and develop an original solution to a valid open-ended technical problem by applying the engineering design process.

Signature Features of High-Quality Career Technical Programs
Do your school's CTE concentrations serve the needs of business and provide instruction for students to be college- and career-ready for careers in the 21st century? According to the National Governors Association Center for Best Practice, the new economy requires not just white-collar workers but also workers with outstanding technical skills and highly developed problem-solving abilities. Business today requires knowledge workers who anticipate, predict, prevent, troubleshoot and solve problems in high-pressure environments. Participants will utilize a comparison graphic organizer to compare SREB's Signature Features for Career Technical Programs with Illinois's Career and Technical Education Program Elements, both of which address these changing business and workplace trends. Participants will analyze these signature features as they review SREB models of four-course sequence career pathway programs of study in high-wage, high-skill and high-demand fields. Why Can't You Be More Like... Like Me!
Isn`t it interesting how different (and funny) we all are? Every day we come in contact with people in our personal and business relationships who are completely different from ourselves. When we communicate with people in a way they truly understand, the relationships blossom. In this talk, Juan explores the humorous behavioral habits of people. Through his outrageous analogies, Juan educates the audience as to what makes different people tick. He will have you laughing (and crying) as you begin to realize those nuances that make each of us unique. With practical tips, Juan equips you to better communicate with others and leaves you with a new appreciation for people "totally opposite" of you.
